The Cross

My morning drive takes me by the church building. This morning my attention was drawn to the mess that the construction and the rain has made and I decided to pull over. It is amazing to me how what looks like a mess on the outside is so beautiful on the inside, not carpet and paint beautiful, God beautiful.

On the other side of that wall, seven people decided to obey the Lord in baptism.

On the other side of that wall, the glorious Word of God was preached and praises to Him sang.

On the other side of that wall, there was an altar that was overflowing.

On the other side of that wall, we were blessed by wonderful times of fellowship and love.

God is so good. What a blessing to be in His presence! The Spirit of God is so real, so strong, so comforting. I’m still living in the overflow of what happened on the other side of that wall yesterday.

Yet I sit here silently in the rain, praising for the beauty, but looking at the mess. Why am I still looking at the mess?

I think sometimes life outside those walls can feel like this construction zone. Sometimes what we think are our supporting structures fall to rubble. Then some garbage rolls in like a tumbleweed, then the rain comes to drench it all…and it feels like a disaster.

But the answer is right there in the middle of the mess.

The cross.

This cross is a reminder of the sacrifice of a God that loves us so much that He walks through our disasters with us! The hard truth is sometimes it takes the struggle to realize where our true strength comes from…God and God alone. The church building is under construction, I think we are too. If we can just be still and trust God to handle our renovations, the results are going to be amazing!

God has a plan!

Many times we read verses in the Bible and to be honest I'm not sure we fully grasp the amazing message that God is trying to tell us. Some of those verses is in Jeremiah 29:11-12 which says, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. 12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you." Many times we read verses in the Bible and to be honest I'm not sure we fully grasp the amazing message that God is trying to tell us. Some of those verses is in Jeremiah 29:11-12 which says, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. 12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you." In these verses what really catches my attention is that God is telling us that He knows the thoughts He has for us. This word "thoughts" in this verse may be better translated as the plans that he has for us. It truly amazes me that God is able to do everything, keep the stars in the sky, makes the sun rise and set, allows the birds to fly, kisses the flowers with dew in the morning and allows them to bloom and yet with everything else that is going on He loves humanity so much that God takes the time to lay out plans for our lives. These verses are telling us God has plans! He has specific plans for each and every individual. He has plans of peace, plans to prosper us, plans to give us hope and a future.

These divinely wonderful verses should reassure us that in this chaotic and strange world that we live in we have a Heavenly Father that is continuously watching out for us, cares for us and is laying out great plans for our success! We need to learn to trust the Lord and trust His will for our lives.

I have learned that for every positive there is a negative. If God has plans for us to prosper and not to be poor, plans for us to be healthy and not to be sick, plans for us to have peace and not to have war why is all of this evil going on in the world? Just as much as God wants the best for us, there is a real Devil that does everything He can to try to rip every blessing away from us.

These verses gives us hope, blessing, and the possibility of a wonderful future. All we have to do is ask God to forgive us and then live in the center of God's Holy will. Friend if you are going through valleys of trials, pits of destruction or situations that overwhelm you, there is hope today because God has a wonderful plan for your life!

Kneeprints

From the quiet of the front pew on a Monday morning, I caught a glimpse of something that I had not noticed before, and it struck me as so profoundly beautiful.

Knee prints.

Knee prints on the altar- still there from the day before. As I enjoyed the sunlight and the quiet, I thought of those that left the knee prints. People that God loves, being obedient to His call to come, humbling themselves, pouring out burdens too heavy to bear, receiving forgiveness, healing and peace or maybe thanking God for His goodness. Of course we can talk to Him… read more

Of course we can talk to Him anywhere, but how amazing it is to have the freedom and privilege to approach the Lord in a beautiful place as this!

An altar being used is evidence of a church alive. Thank you Lord that we are no longer a church just surviving, but thriving and pursuing You and Your miraculous plan for us openly and fervently!

There's a light in the darkness

There's a love that's true

And Jesus is waiting

He is waiting here for you

Hearts are being broken

Lives are being changed

That's what this altar is for..

Don't miss the awe

It is so easy to slip into the pattern of just going about life, isn’t it? We go day to day focused on our never ending to-do list. There are kids or parents to take care of, bills to pay, people and work that needs your attention. Life is short. James 4:14 describes life as “a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” I don’t want to be an alarmist here, but what if you spend your whole life so focused on that “to-do” list and you miss it? It is so easy to slip into the pattern of just going about life, isn’t it? We go day to day focused on our never ending to-do list. There are kids or parents to take care of, bills to pay, people and work that needs your attention. Life is short. James 4:14 describes life as “a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” I don’t want to be an alarmist here, but what if you spend your whole life so focused on that “to-do” list and you miss it? What is “it” you ask? The awe! Don’t miss the awe! The things God has going on around us while we work on our to-do lists.

We throw around the word “awesome” all the time. If you remember the 80’s I’m sure you’re heard the term “totally awesome” 3 million times, sometimes followed by “dude”...NOT the awe I’m talking about. We say “this pizza is awesome”; you got new shoes Fran, “those are awesome”…stop it. That is not awesome.

I’m talking about the colors in the sunset, birth of a baby, the vastness of the ocean, talking to God and feeling Him answer you down deep in your soul. Praying and praying and then you watch God orchestrate something better than you could have even imagined in His perfect timing! God is awesome! The physical world He’s created is awesome. Have you seen some of the crazy looking creatures in the sea? They are much more awesome than Fran’s new shoes. Think about it, you woke up this morning and blood is pumping through the complex systems of veins, arteries, and organs in your body. Air is moving in and out of your lungs, and your body just works. You don’t have to do anything but live in it. You, my friend, are a walking, breathing miracle.

I look at God working through people in awe. Even in my own church I’ve seen the reconciliation of families and friendships, I see people so overwhelmed with the Spirit of God that they can’t stop the tears, and healings that doctors can’t explain. I’ve seen people sacrificing their own time and comfort to help others. I’ve stood behind a dear sister in church and heard her call out MY child’s name in prayer. She didn’t know I was there and I never told her my child needed prayer, but she knew…that’s love…and I stand in awe at what God’s doing in His people.

If you haven’t felt the awe in a while, step away from your desk or dirty dishes and read a psalm. Then close your eyes and absorb what you’re reading…try it, trust me, the work isn’t going anywhere, at least mine never does. Step outside and look up, seriously, just look up. The light, the sky, the trees… just let yourself be in awe for just a minute at what the Lord has given you and praise Him! Finally, pray. If you have to go into the bathroom and shut the door so nobody will bother you, do it! God, the all-powerful maker of the universe and sustainer of you, has given you a direct line to Him through prayer. Connect with Him. I promise it is well worth the time you will spend. I know the “to-do” list is so long, and we can’t walk around with our heads in the clouds, but just take a minute to notice what He’s doing.

Please don’t miss the awe.
